Process
Each of the three group members will be assigned to play a
certain role within this consensus building activity. I will assign
your given role. Once you have received your assignments, go through
the following steps to complete your individual work.
-
Read through the assignment descriptions listed below
so you know how to progress through the project in your given
role.
Evolutionist:
Read through the directions for the Evolutionist
point of view.
Creationist:
Read through the directions for the Creationist
point of view.
Hybridist:
Read through the directions for the Hybridist
point of view.
-
As a group, complete Activity
1, which is an evolution basics review. Designed to be a
review of the topics, concepts, and vocabulary we talked about in
class.
-
Next, as an individual you need to research your
particular assigned point of view. While researching your point
of view, you should read through, print, and answer the questions on
the Activity 2 worksheet. These
questions will help you to start asking relevant questions about your
point of view. Do not limit yourself to these questions.
Ask and answer others that you encounter. These are just to get you started.
-
Once you have come to an understanding of your point
of view, your group members should attempt to decide among the three
of you if Evolution should be taught in your school. Attempt to
build a consensus, this means take into account all points of view and
reach a decision you can all agree on. Remember to take into account
the information on the Indiana State Academic Standards while you were
doing Activity 2.
Note: Not all groups will reach the same consensus. There is no
right or wrong here. This is your chance to talk about the
issues among yourselves and work through the dilemma and objectively
evaluate all sides.
-
Next, you need to create a PowerPoint presentation,
web page, or brochure to present your group's consensus to the school
board in an effort to convince them to vote your way. This
presentation should include your rationale for your decision, complete
with answers to all possible counterarguments. More information
on the grading and required elements for the presentation can be found
on the evaluation rubric on the evaluation page. Each group
member should be responsible for working on the part of the
presentation relevant to their area of expertise in terms of content
and mechanics.
-
Next, print and fill out the Personal
Evaluation Form. On this form you will evaluate your own
performance and look at you own thoughts and feelings as you
progressed through this assignment.
-
Finally you need to fill out the Group
Evaluation Form. You need to complete one for each of the other members of your group. This will be used to
evaluate each member's contributions to the final project.
Additional information useful throughout the project can
be found on the Resource Page.
